Installation of Boiler: The Shuttle Tanker Peary Spirit Visits Mekjarvik
The ship, measuring an impressive 250 meters in length, transports oil from offshore platforms to land. Recently, the vessel was in Mekjarvik for the installation of a boiler, an operation that requires careful planning and compliance with technical and safety requirements.
Peary Spirit is a large ship, measuring 250 meters in length. When transporting crude oil, the oil must be kept warm to prevent it from becoming too thick and difficult to pump. A boiler on the ship produces steam, which heats both the cargo holds and the pipes, ensuring that the oil remains fluid and can be easily pumped in and out.
Some ships also use the boiler to generate electricity on board, contributing to the ship’s power supply for everything from lighting to operational equipment.
The boiler can also serve multiple functions in the operation of the shuttle tanker.
Recently, the ship had a new boiler installed at GMC in Mekjarvik, where Glenn Vatland (Project Lead in GMC Maritime) and the team ensured an efficient process.
The boiler was lifted on board during the night.
“For a shuttle tanker like this, there are specific regulations and standards that must be followed. We’ve worked extensively to prepare the installation in advance, ensuring everything runs smoothly from the moment the ship arrives at the quay in Mekjarvik until it departs again,” says Glenn Vatland, Project Lead at GMC Maritime.
With the new boiler on board, the ship gains greater flexibility during its crossings and in handling the oil it transports.
We thank Altera for their trust and for the excellent collaboration with VOC on this project.
